Racial discrimination is a social evil with which India is dealing for many centuries. We were grown up in an environment where discrimination based on race is quite rampant and for many, it’s a part of our lives that we ignore easily. But racial discrimination is a curse to the dignity of human beings as no one deserved to be discriminated against based on his/her race. The movie has a realistic portrayal of the discrimination faced by northeast people in mainland India.

The Family Man is a popular web series featuring Manoj Bajpayee in the lead and it is streaming on Amazon Prime. The Family Man is an espionage thriller where Manoj Bajpayee plays the role of Srikant who works in the intelligence bureau. In the second season of the series, it showed how north Indians stereotyped the whole of south Indian states and takes them as one. South India consists of many states with different languages, cultures, etc but for most of the people from the mainland, people from south India are just south Indians with no identity in their respective states.

Chak De India starring Shahrukh Khan is probably one of the best sports-based movie and along with sports, it also deals with the subject of racial discrimination in our country. There is a scene in the movie where a registrar of team India welcomes two girl hockey players by saying welcome to our country and calls them guests, to which the girls reply that no one can be happy if he/she is considered a guest in their own country. This small scene tells a lot about the ignorance of mainland people towards north east India.

Jugaadistan is a web series about the issues like politics and competition in colleges while touching on the issue of racial discrimination also. In one of the episodes, the character of Kenny, who is from northeast India gets beaten by his own team members who bully him with racial slurps. The show effectively shows how students of northeast India have to regularly face seclusion and toxic treatment in colleges and schools.

2 States is the cinematic adaptation of Chetan Bhagat’s book of the same name. Featuring Arjun Kapoor and Alia Bhatt, it is a love story about a Punjabi boy and Tamil girl and how their ethnicity creates a problem in getting married to each other. The movie shows how north Indians and South Indians are always at loggerheads and for north Indians; every south Indian is Madrasi, that’s how Arjun Kapoor’s mother addresses the girl.

Anek stars Ayushman Khurana and it’s directed by Anubhav Sinha who earlier directed hard-hitting movies like Mulk, Article 15, and Thappad. After dealing with issues like religious discrimination, caste-based problems, and women empowerment in his earlier movies; with Anek he touches on the issue of racial discrimination towards northeast people by mainland Indians. Anek is a powerful movie that tries to say that irrespective of the diversity of the country we all are Indians and there should be no racial discrimination among us.
