Salman Khan is probably the biggest star of India right now who is continuously giving big hits. Even his so-called ‘flop’ movies like Race 3 earned more than 100 crores which is a benchmark for the success of other actors. But we all have to agree that despite his superstardom that can make any movie a hit, the quality of most of Salman Khan movies is not up to the mark barring a Bajrangi Bhaijaan or Sultan. Most of his movies nowadays are just a platform to showcase his stardom and acting takes a back seat. But there have been times when Salman Khan gave good performances breaking the myth that he can’t act.
Maine Pyaar Kia
Suraj Barjatya directed movie Maine Pyaar Kia was Salman Khan’s first role as a male lead and he actually gave an earnest performance in the movie. He played the character of Prem, a name that became synonymous with Salman Khan in many movies. The character of Prem needed a certain amount of innocence and maybe because Salman Khan himself was like that in real life, it won’t be incorrect to say that Salman Khan as Prem gave an intense yet charming performance.
Love is a Salman Khan movie about which many don’t know even by Salman Khan fans. But if you are a Salman Khan fan then you should watch this movie as it had one of Salman Khan’s best acts. South actress Revathy was opposite him in the lead role and the movie had a memorable song Saathiya Tune Kia Kya. In the movie, Salman Khan displayed his vulnerable side and gave a sincere performance. One of the few movies where the superstar Salman Khan didn’t overshadow Salman Khan the actor.
Andaz Apna Apna
The first and probably the only time when Salman Khan and Aamir Khan worked together in a movie. Today it’s considered a cult classic but you will be surprised to know that it was a big flop when released. Directed by Rajkumar Santoshi, the movie was a laugh riot and Salman Khan gave a very good performance as the gullible Prem. Salman Khan through his perfect comic timing gave an impeccable performance and stood out of his own in the movie which already had actors like Aamir Khan, Paresh Rawal and Shakti Kapoor.
Sanjay Leela Bhansali directed this emotional drama movie Khamoshi with Salman Khan, Manisha Koirala, Nana Patekar and Seema Biswas in pivotal roles. The movie was mainly about the character of Annie, an aspiring singer and her deaf and dumb parents played by Nana Patekar and Seema Biswas. Salman Khan as Raj was more of a supporting character but he shined in the movie with his sincere performance. The movie boasted some really good songs specially Aaj main upar and Baahon ke Darmiyan.
Tere Naam created a mass hysteria after its release and Salman Khan’s character Radhey became quite famous among his fans. His hairstyle in the movie became a trend with many youngsters donning the look with long hair. Tere Naam had much more to offer than just the look of Salman Khan. Salman Khan as Radhey perfectly portrayed the character of a lovelorn lover and it’s one the few films where Salman Khan showed his acting prowess. Tere Naam also marked the Bollywood debut of Bhumika Chawla who portrayed the character of Nirjara in the movie. With memorable music by Himesh Reshamiya, Tere Naam still remains one of Salman’s best movies and the climax of the movie can make even a stone-hearted man to have tears in his eyes.
Salman Khan is not the type of actor who gets immersed in the character he is playing and changes his looks and physique for a particular movie but Ali Abbas Jafar directed Sultan was an exception. In the movie, Salman Khan plays a wrestler and the movie shows his journey from an amateur wrestler to a world champion and then to a grumpy middle-aged man and again a wrestler. He gained his weight to play the character in his 40s and then again made a good physique to look like a wrestler. Sultan is a testimony to the fact that given a chance, Salman Khan can actually give brilliant performance and rise above the image of Salman Khan, the superstar.
