The Ultimate Diva of Bollywood; Kareena Kapoor

The name Kareena Kapoor needs no introduction and one of the top female actors in Bollywood. She belongs to the illustrious Kapoor family often regarded as the first family of Bollywood. She is the daughter of Randhir Kapoor and Babita. The showman Raj Kapoor was her grandfather and acting runs in their blood. Her elder sister Karishma Kapoor was one of the biggest female stars in the 90s. She was born on 21 September 1980 in Mumbai. She used to visit sets of movies where Karishma is shooting as a kid and got quite fascinated by this world and that is when she decided to act in movies. She was supposed to make her debut with Hrithik Roshan in Kaho Na Pyaar Hai and even shot a few scenes for the movie but later she opted out of the movie because of reasons unknown. According to sources, it was because of her mother Babita’s over-participation, and allegedly demanded more money than what Rakesh Roshan was paying. Later Rakesh Roshan signed Ameesha Patel for the movie which went into becoming a blockbuster movie.

Kareena Kapoor made her debut with Abhishek Bachchan in the movie Refugee and after a great opening, the movie didn’t do well at the Box office. Though her performance in the movie was quite impressive and she won Filmfare Best Debut (Female) that year. Her first hit was Mujhe Kuch Kehna Hai directed by Satish Kaushik in 2001. In the same year, she acted in two more hit movies, Ajnabee with Bobby Deol, Akshay Kumar, and Bipasha Basu, and Karan Johar’s magnum opus Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham which had an ensemble cast of Amitabh Bachchan, Jaya Bachchan, Shahrukh Khan, Kajol and Hrithik Roshan opposite whom she featured for the first time. It was the second biggest hit in India after Gadar and internationally it was the top earner Bollywood movie of 2001.

With movies like Chameli, Dev, Omkara, and Asoka, she proved that along with being a star, she is a good actor. She received a Special Performance Award at Filmfare for her performance in Chameli. After Kabhi Kabhie Gham, her chemistry with Hrithik Roshan sizzled the screen even with the presence of the iconic jodi Shahrukh Khan and Kajol but apart from this movie all movies which had Hrithik-Kareena like Mujhse Dosti Karoge, Main Prem ki Deewani Hoon and Yaadein failed at the box office and they never acted together again till date. She started dating Shahid Kapoor and they were one of the most famous couples at that time and did many movies together but most of them didn’t click at the box office barring 36 China Town which did decent business at the box office. They eventually broke up after four years of relationship.

After a period of some flops, she made comeback with Vishal Bhardwaj’s adaptation of Othello and titled it Omkara where her character was based on Desdemona. The movie had an ensemble cast of Ajay Degn, Saif Ali Khan, Vivek Oberai, Konkana Sen Sharma and Naseerudin Shah. She received Filmfare Critics Award for Best Actress for her portrayal of Dolly, an innocent girl who falls for Omkara played by Devgn has been one of the high points of the movie.

The year 2007 has been a very important year for her, both personally and professionally. She did a movie called Tashan, a multistarrer action film with an ensemble cast of Akshay Kumar, Anil Kapoor, and Saif Ali Khan along with her. The movie was a flop but during the shoot of the movie, both fell in love and got married on 16 October 2012, and together they have two sons. In the same year, she acted with her ex-boyfriend Shahid Kapoor’s Jab We Met directed by Imtiaz Ali. Jab We Met has been a breakthrough movie in her career and her portrayal of Geet, a lively girl got her lots of acclaim. The movie became a big hit and one of the most iconic movies of that decade. She won her first Filmfare Best Actor (Female) for the movie. In her career spanning more than two decades, she gave many big hits like 3 Idiots, Bodyguard, Two Golmaal Movies, Singham 2, Udta Punjab, Bajrangi Bhaijaan, etc.
