In movies, a hero is as good as his villain. The more powerful the villain is, the more will be the struggle of the hero which makes a movie more interesting. Bollywood from its heydays always gave quite a lot of importance to the character of villains that gave birth to many iconic on-screen villains.

Here we will discuss six such iconic villains who are remembered more than the heroes.

Gabbar Singh (Sholay)

Gabbar Singh (Sholay)

Without any doubt, Gabbar Singh is the most popular and iconic villain ever from Bollywood. When the movie was released, among all the characters the character of Gabbar Singh became the most famous and iconic. Who can forget the iconic lines, ‘Kitne Aadmi The’ or ‘Holi Kab Hai, Kab hai Holi.’? These iconic lines were delivered by Amjad Khan who played the role of Dacoit Gabbar Singh in the blockbuster movie Sholay. Sholay had an array of iconic characters from Jai and Veeru to Thakur to Basanti but it was Gabbar Singh who was the scene-stealer in the movie. The character of Gabbar Singh became so famous even among the kids that the biscuit company signed Amjad Khan as its brand ambassador in the character of Gabbar Singh. Amjad Khan put life to the character of dacoit Gabbar Singh who was a sadist and so cruel that he does not even leave kids while taking revenge. Till the time, movies are made in India; the character of Gabbar Singh will always be etched in the memory of the people as the most badass villain in Indian cinema.

Mogambo (Mr. India)

Mogambo (Mr. India)

After Gabbar Singh, another villain who comes close to being one of the most famous and iconic villains is no other then Mogambo played by Amrish Puri in the movie Mr. India. The only brief director Shekhar Kapoor gave to Amrish Puri was to play Gabbar Singh imagining playing a Shakespeare character in front of kids. And what a performance Amrish Puri gave as Mogambo and after the movie was released; the signature dialogue of Mogambo, ‘Mogambo khush hua’ was in the mouth of everyone. Mogambo became a household name and more than the hero Mr. India, people liked the eccentric character of Mogambo who wanted to break India and bring anarchy here.

Langda Tyagi (Omkara)

Langda Tyagi (Omkara)

Omkara was an adaptation of Shakespeare’s famous play Othello which the director set in the hinterlands of India among the local mafias and politicians and Saif Ali Khan played the main antagonist Langda Tyagi based on Iago from the play. Saif Ali Khan had this image of an uber-cool metrosexual city guy before Omakara when Vishal Bhardwaj signed him to play Langda Tyagi, a henchman of Bahubali Omkara (Ajay Devgn) and set in the power politics of Uttar Pradesh, everyone was apprehensive about how Saif it pull it off. But when the movie was released, everyone was blown away by Saif’s performance as the scheming and evil Langda Tyagi. Right from the accent to the body language, Sauf just nailed the character of Langda Tyagi and walked away with most of the accolades for the movie.

Allauddin Khilji (Padmaavat)

Ranveer Singh played the iconic character of Allauddin Khilji in the magnum opus ‘Padmaavat’ directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali. Ranveer Singh in an interview said that while preparing for the evil character of Allaudin Khilji, he got so much in touch with his inner devil that he himself got afraid of it. When we saw the movie, it what he said seemed totally believable as Ranveer Singh gave his life and soul to play the character of Allauddin Khilji. From the menacing look to his evil glance, Ranveer Singh perfected the character of Khilji. The movie was a big hit when released and Ranveer’s portrayal of Allauddin Khilji was applauded universally and he won many awards for his performance.

Lajja Shankar Pandey (Sangharsh)

Lajja Shankar Pandey (Sangharsh)

Ashutosh Rana’s performance as Lajja Shankar Pandey in Sanghash sends a chill down our bodies even after more than twenty years of the movie being released. Sangharsh starring Akshay Kumar and Preity Zinta was inspired by the movie ‘Silence of the Lambs’ and Ashutosh Rana played the character of psycho killer Lajja Shankar Pandey who kills young children to gain a boon of immortality from Goddess Kali. He was so blinded by his superstition that he can’t able to differentiate between devotion to God and Obsession with God. Ashutosh Rana’s performance was so terrifying that his character became an epitome of evil when released. One of the best performances in a negative role ever, he walked away with many awards for this movie.

Crime Master Gogo (Andaz Apna Apna)

Crime Master Gogo (Andaz Apna Apna)

Personally Crime Master Gogo from cult classic Andaz Apna Apna is the most favorite villain from Bollywood for me. With a stellar cast like Aamir Khan, Salman Khan, Karishma Kapoor, Raveena Tondon, it was Mogambo ka bhatija Crime master Gogo who stole the show from everyone when he appaeraed in the movie. His dialogue Aaya hut oh kuch na kuch leke jaunga and Ankhen nikal ke gotiya khelunga became iconic dialogues. Performed by ever bankable Shakti Kapoor, Crime Master Gogo no doubt is the most famous villains ever.
