Seven Dog Breeds who are Known for Their Distinctive Characteristics

From the time homo sapiens came into existence, it’s believed they kept dogs and both evaluated together and that’s why both humans and dogs feel affectionate to each other. In the beginning, they helped human beings in hunting, and after human beings learned agriculture, domesticated cattle, and started living within a community dogs were used to guard cattle and also guard their farms. “Dogs are men’s best friends” is not just a quote but a reality. All breeds have their own characteristics and here we will discuss seven different breeds and their distinctive characteristics.

  1. Scottish Terrier

Scottish terriers also called the Scottie as the name suggests originated first from Scotland. By nature, they are territorial, alert, quick moving, and energetic, possibly even more than other terrier breeds. They are short-legged but significantly terrier with distinguishing features including their beard, legs, and lower body. They have a wiry, soft, dense undercoat. It has got bright, piercing eyes, which makes them excellent watchdogs. Their hunting instinct is still quite strong and it’s not friendly to other animals they can be belligerent around other dogs but they are very loyal to their owners.

  1. Bullmastiff

 Bullmastiff is a gentle, affectionate dog, and is a good choice for families with reasonably well-behaved children. While they are quite loyal and affectionate towards their families, they are suspicious by nature and that is why it’s important to train them from a very young age so they won’t be wary of strangers when growing up. Their looks include droopy eyes and naturally floppy ears, a black nose, and its tail is set high on the rear end. Nevertheless, despite its normal easy-going nature, it’s important to supervise them when it’s near children and it’s because they so large that they may unintentionally knock a child over. Socialization and training are very important to keep them as pets.

  1. Papillon

 Papillon is also known as Continental Toy Spaniel and is a breed of dog, of the spaniel kind. It’s small in size and looks very cute and can be kept at home as a toy dog. It’s small in size, measuring 8 to 11 inches at the shoulder, and it has large, wing-shaped ears that give the breed its name as in french Butterfly is called papillon. By nature, they are alert, friendly, playful, and happy dogs. They are quite intelligent and can be trained easily. They can be very good companions to children as it’s quite playful also. Their agility is quite good and can win various sports arranged for dogs.

  1. Rhodesian Ridgeback

Rhodesian Ridgebacks are large-sized, scenthound, and sighthound dogs and they originated from the Southern Africa region. By nature, they are dignified, affectionate, and even-tempered. This dog’s trademark is the ridge, or stripe of backward-growing hair, on his back. In the beginning, in native Africa, it was used for its skill at tracking and baying during hunting. Today they are cherished family dogs who are loyal and affectionate to their owners. Rhodesian Ridgebacks are fast runners like powerful athletes and it weighs between 70 and 85 pounds. They come in only one color, wheaten, with various shades.

5.Belgian Malinois

 The Belgian Malinois is a breed of medium-sized herding dog which originated in Belgium first. This breed of dog is intensely confident and protective towards its family. These dogs are not friendly with strangers and are loyal and affectionate only toward their family members, and this characteristic makes it a good choice for a family dog. Because of the reason that they were actually herding dogs, their guarding and watchdog skills are still flawless.

  1. Chesapeake Bay Retriever

 Chesapeake Bay retriever belongs to the retriever breed of dogs and it’s quite large-sized. This breed was developed in the USA during the 19th century. By nature, these dogs are bright, affectionate, and sensitive. Its size varies from 21 to 26 inches, weighs around 55-80 pounds and its lifespan is 10-13 years. They are strong, powerfully built gundogs and an ideal choice if you are looking for a dog that along with being loyal can provide protection and can be used as a watchdog also. Chesapeake Bay retriever’s distinctive breed trait is its wavy coat that feels oily when touched. These dogs are mostly chocolaty brown with keen yellow-amber eyes that pleasantly balance the coat. 

  1. Portuguese Water Dog  

The Portuguese water dog is a medium-sized working breed and as the name suggests it first originated in Portugal. They have got floppy ears, facial hair, and wavy or curly fur. These dogs don’t shed very much and they’re an ideal breed for people with mild to moderate allergies. These dogs are of high-energy breed, so they’re ideal for active owners looking for a dog that can accompany them during outdoor activities.
